Andrea Smit joined the Mistlberger Lab in 2009 and has conducted a wide variety of research on different aspects of circadian rhythms ranging from dopaminergic regulation of feeding behavior to electrophysiological correlates of attention in early birds and night owls. Her MA thesis examined the effects of biological time on academic performance. For her PhD work she travelled to the archipelago country of Vanuatu to examine the sleep habits of people in conditions with minimal electrical lighting. In 2015 she was awarded the Canada Graduate Scholarship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

From SFU he obtained a BA with honours in Psychology in 2013 and went on to quickly complete his MA 2 years later. His research has focused on a variety of topics including studying the involvement of dopamine in the circadian feeding system, the effects of Alzheimer’s on behavioural rhythms, and making brains glow using luciferase. His research has been funded through Masters and PhD level post-graduate scholarships from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Christian Petersen is a PhD student in Dr. Ralph Mistlberger's Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience laboratory at Simon Fraser University. His primary research interests include the various strategies organisms employ to time regularly occurring events important to their survival, which include circadian rhythms and short interval timing. He obtained his BSc in psychology from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah and spent a year at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before finding his way to SFU and hasn’t looked back since.
